Centre Manager

  • Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care
“I believe in play-based learning, following each child’s interests, and creating environments tailored to their individual needs. I am committed to advocating for the rights of every child. “

I began my career in early childhood education and care in 2010 and joined Great Beginnings Berwick as Centre Manager in 2021.

Building relationships with families and witnessing children achieve milestones from their first day at the centre until they go off to school is truly special. I believe in play-based learning, following each child’s interests, and creating environments tailored to their individual needs. I am committed to advocating for the rights of every child.

Social exposure is crucial for children, helping them navigate play with peers, become more resilient, communicate better, and develop a strong sense of self. In our nursery, children learn to form secure attachments; in the toddler rooms, they develop autonomy; and in the kindergarten room, they prepare for school, fostering a positive association with learning. Our dedicated team of early childhood educators creates a nurturing, home-like environment where each child can reach their full potential.

Building strong relationships with families begins with the initial tour, understanding their expectations, and maintaining open communication for a smooth transition from home to care. We offer amenities like a coffee/tea station, a community pantry, a library and a clothes swap corner for our families.

Our enrolment pack includes a step-by-step guide to the process, beginning with applying for the Child Care Subsidy (CCS). We support families through each step, from submitting enrolment forms to using our app, Xplor. We partner with families from the initial tour until their child transitions to school.

I look forward to welcoming your family to our Berwick early learning centre and answering any questions you may have.

Early Childhood Teacher (3-year-old Kinder)

  • Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood)
“In our three-year-old kindergarten room, I strive to support children’s diverse interests, capabilities, and needs by designing programs that extend their learning and development.”

My name is Joyleen, and I teach the three-year-old kindergarten class. I graduated from the University of Melbourne with a qualification in Early Childhood Teaching and have been working with children aged three to eight since 2019.

My teaching philosophy centres on prioritising the rights of every child and creating an inclusive, equitable learning environment. I place each child at the heart of my teaching, ensuring they have opportunities to develop as confident, valued members of both their local and global communities. I believe every child is unique, with their own strengths, interests, and ways of learning.

In our three-year-old kindergarten room, I strive to support children’s diverse interests, capabilities, and needs by designing programs that extend their learning and development. Rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach, I tailor the program and environment to engage and excite young learners at their individual levels. I look forward to working closely with families to support each child’s journey and help them thrive!

Our Berwick Kindergarten’s Philosophy

Our kindergarten’s philosophy is centred on the belief that children are capable, competent, and curious learners. We create aesthetically beautiful, sustainable spaces filled with natural light and open-ended materials that encourage exploration, creativity, and collaboration. We celebrate each child’s individuality and foster a lifelong love for learning through holistic experiences that develop social, emotional, cognitive, and physical skills.

Strong partnerships with families are at the heart of our approach. We work closely with parents and caregivers to understand each child’s needs, celebrate their successes, and support their developmental journey. By creating an inclusive, culturally respectful environment, we cultivate a strong sense of belonging and well-being for every child.

Our Kindergarten’s learning goals

At our kindergarten in Berwick, children’s learning goals are carefully structured across the year to nurture every child’s growth and school readiness:

Term 1: Sense of belonging

We focus on building a strong foundation where children feel safe, valued, and included. Through positive relationships with peers and educators, children develop trust, emotional security, and a sense of identity within the kindergarten community.

Term 2: Social and emotional development

During Term 2, we nurture children’s ability to recognise, express, and manage their emotions. Children are guided to develop resilience, confidence, and independence, with a strong focus on building emotional regulation skills through cooperative play, guided discussions, and reflective experiences.

Term 3: Developing autonomy

Throughout Term 3, children are encouraged to make choices, take on leadership roles, and build personal responsibility. Through everyday activities and project work, we support children in becoming confident decision-makers who can independently navigate their learning environment.

Term 4: School readiness

In Term 4, our focus shifts toward preparing children for the exciting transition to primary school. We provide experiences such as community walks, lunch box practice weeks, and structured transition activities that familiarise children with school routines, promote independence, and build excitement and confidence for “the big school”.

Kindergarten program with long day care hours

Whether you’re a parent who works, studies, or simply needs additional flexibility in your day, our enhanced learning program offers the perfect balance of quality early education and extended care. We provide access to the Victorian Government’s “Best Start, Best Life” Kinder Program within a long daycare setting, ensuring children receive a structured, play-based learning experience while benefiting from longer care hours.

Our centre offers flexible long daycare options, with session lengths of up to 9, 10, 11, or 12 hours, catering to different family needs. Plus, families can take advantage of our combined Kindergarten and Long Daycare program, which includes 15 hours per week, 600 hours per year, at low or no cost. ** This means your child gets the best start in their educational journey while you enjoy the convenience and support of extended care options.

Communicating with families

At our Berwick Kindergarten, we believe that open communication and strong family partnerships are vital to a child’s early learning journey. Through the Xplor app, families receive regular updates on their child’s progress, achievements, and memorable moments from their day, creating a strong connection between home and kindergarten.

We value and encourage family input, recognising that families provide essential insights into each child’s background, needs, and interests. By working together, we tailor learning experiences, foster cultural responsiveness, and create a supportive environment where every child feels seen, valued, and celebrated.

Frequently asked questions

In Australia, sessional kindergartens or preschools are usually operated by local government, religious organisations, schools, private organisations or the community. They usually run during school term and school hours, meaning the program runs for 40 weeks per year, with most sessions finishing up around 2 pm, over 2-3 days per week.

The kindergarten or preschool program is also offered in long day care centres. Most long day care centres are open from 7:00 AM. to 6:00 PM, Monday to Friday with flexible drop-off/pick-up times to better accommodate busy working families. Long day care centres run 52 weeks per year, meaning your child would not miss out on valuable learning opportunities during school holidays.

Nutritional meals and snacks are covered in long day care centres, so you don’t have to worry about packing lunches.

Child Care Subsidy still applies when your child attends the kindergarten or preschool programs offered in long day care services. Depending on your state or territory, different funding options can be combined with your Child Care Subsidy savings, making kindergarten or preschool more affordable for your family.

Essentially, there is no difference between the curriculums adopted by long day care and sessional kindergarten or preschool providers. They are both run by qualified early childhood teachers, and they all align with Early Years Learning Framework, focusing on supporting individual children’s development, interests and needs through play-based and intentional learning experiences.

If your child is already settled at a long day care centre, they have the opportunity to stay in a familiar environment, transitioning together with their friends.

To receive the Best Start, Best Life Kinder subsidy, your child needs to turn 4 years on or before 30th April 2024 and enrolled in a funded Kindergarten program in 2024. Our program runs 5 days a week for 52 weeks of the year. During the period where the government funded kindergarten does not apply, your CCS will reduce your out of pocket expense.

The Victorian Government will subsidise 15 hours per week over, 600 hours per year which can be applied over 52 weeks (minimum 2 days per week). As a long day care provider, we offer a 5 day per week program and your child can attend more than 2 days per week. No, you can only access funding at one centre for 15 hours a week, which can be applied over 52 weeks.

This is an additional subsidy from the Victorian Government that will apply to a portion of your fees after the Childcare Subsidy is applied. The percentage of CCS your family is entitled to for non-funded Kindergarten program hours will not change.

We have good news for families who are not eligible for CCS.

The VIC Government will subsidise the 15 hours per week of free Kindergarten, which can be applied across 52 weeks. Outside of these subsidised hours, full fees will be applied.
